is etco2 supposed to work with cpap ? we put cpap on a pt and the etco2 readings went haywire. the etco2 did not measure this particular pt's resp rate correctly in the first place, probably due to low tidal volume. Initial etco2 readings were 60 rr 24 (actual rr 50+) that went to single digits for both measurements after cpap was applied.

I havent tried it yet. Did you use the cannula or the in-line ETCO2 filter line?

I would only guess then; that with the continuous positive pressure and no noteable negative pressure cycles that the ETCO2 detector would not be able to count the resp. rate and would have the sample contaminated with excess gasses from the release of more O2 upon pt. inspiration and not be able to give accurate CO2 data readouts.

Back again to treat the patient not the machine, or for occasional accurate measurements temporarily take CPAP off the patient.

I would venture a guess that depending on how tight the mask is and using the Nasal Cannula type ETCO2 detector that the CPAP mask and straps assembly may have placed excess pressure on the ETCO2 lines cutting off the flow back to the LP12. Remember that the tubing for the ETCO2 is not rigid plastic and tends to kink off or close off all together. If I had to venture a guess that would be my 2 cents worth.
