Humeral IO's ROCK! i just did it twice the other day on an arrest patient... easy, easy, easy, fast, fast, fast... why twice, you ask? well, an AFD FF accidentally dislodged it during moving the pt. Oops.

oh, the moral of this story - IO's are not officially approved for use yet. again, oops.

Brockman told me that even though we may have had the training during re-assingment, the system as a whole is not allowed to use them yet.

nothing stepping on the IV line won't take care of...

sidebar - the boys from E11 said i was the first medic in 17 years they had seen pump chest... kinda flattering, kinda concerning too. BUT, figure this one out... at the end of the call, E11 cleaned the back of our truck! pleases, thank-yous, and good-jobs go a long way.

First off, CONGRATULATIONS and WELCOME to the family! Yes, the new IO placement will be added to the COGs but not for some time (it will take until at least June to get the entire system through the inservice. Don't stress about those details now -- you will be given everything you need to know in the Academy. They will prepare you well for what is expected of you and there will be PLENTY of cog discussion/study.

Matt... I still don't understand how one can easily dislodge an EZ-IO. You really have to pull on those suckers to get them out. But, when there's a will, there's a way. As for pumping chest -- if there's another first responder agency that can take over my role of pushing meds and other ALS procedures once they arrive on-scene, I will gladly roll up my sleeves and push on someone's chest and/or ventilate until they tell me to do something different.

I had the pleasure of witnessing another ETCO2 cover gracefully jump ship from the LP12 monitor it was inhabiting last night. I then proceeded to help it out by dropping it directly in the trash where it belongs since it hadn't enough gusto left from that excursion to actually grow legs and do it itself. Did I mention FLIMSY????!!!!

One of the downfalls of the written word is that you hear no voice inflection nor see any facial expression... There was no ill intent meant towards Matt concerning this discussion on IO's and/or medics pushing chest.. My apologies to Matt for he mistakenly took it this way.

If the IO had been in the right extremity...well, now that's a different story I've heard that the forehead IO is the real way to fly! Nuthin but love for ya brotha!

Seriously though, I hear that the humoral head IO's are 'da bomb!

As I understand it, there will be an official notice when we can place them and everyone has been through the training with the issue of new update to the COG's. Until then we have to wait to use them in the humerus.
